Back Catalogue Books - Q&A with Tracie Podger

Back Catalogue Books is my new regular Saturday feature, focusing on books that are not the latest releases. There is going to be a mix of Q&As and also reviews, depending on what I have the space for.

If you are an author wanting to take part in Back Catalogue Books then please do email on gilbster at gmail dot com and I'll whizz the questions over to you.

I hope everyone enjoys this weekly look back at some of the slightly older books that are about but still great, and that I eventually make a dent in my TBRs as a result of it!

Thank you for the opportunity to talk about my books. My name is Tracie Podger and I’m a multi-genre author with eleven books available. I currently live in Kent with the hubby and a rather obnoxious cat called George. In addition to writing, I’m a Padi Scuba Diving Instructor and I like to get up close and personal with sharks!

Please tell me about your first book, and what started you writing in the first place.

I suffer with depression and some time ago I spent time in what I affectionately call the ‘nuthouse’. During my time there I was encouraged to write a journal, that journal ended up hundreds of pages long. When I got home I decided to turn that journal in a ‘story’. Initially, it was just for me, a way of exorcising my demons, I guess. Some weeks later I had nearly 100k of words in a document I called, A Virtual Affair. A couple of things happened. I fell in love with something other than my misery, and for the first time in a while my mind was clear. I loved the process of writing. A Virtual Affair was not supposed to be seen, I parked it to one side but immediately started to write another story – Fallen Angel, Part 1. I released A Virtual Affair this year, after many rewrites, of course, and seven years after I first wrote it.

How many books have you written and what are they?

I’ve written 15 (and a bit) books. I have the twelfth being released at the end of this year.

The first book I published was Fallen Angel, Part 1. This is mafia romance, with the emphasis on the romance. There are four books in the series (I just couldn’t get the characters to quit talking!), and then four accompanying novels about the main characters. With the Fallen Angel series, I wanted to explore what it would be like for a British woman to fall in love with a mafia man and take a journey into a lifestyle she’d only ever seen in a movie.

The Facilitator is erotic romance and I just love the characters! Mackenzie Miller, an American, and Lauren Perry, a Brit, have a feisty relationship. This book asks one question – What would you do if someone offered you the chance to experience all your fantasies?

Gabriel was my first foray into the thriller/suspense genre. I saw an image on a photographers Facebook page and fell in love with it. I bought the image and it became the inspiration for the novel. Gabriel is a single father on a mission to discover who murdered his wife. In doing so, he uncovers some soul-destroying truths. A battle begins – He has the greatest religion on one side, and a mad man on the other. Gabriel is stuck in the middle and fighting for his survival.

A Virtual Affair is one woman’s journey through depression, loss, and love. I get asked all the time about the title. Is this a story about affairs? No, it’s way more than that. Virtual has two meanings: Nearly and Online. Jayne is mid-forties when her world is rocked to the core. Some will find her a weak woman, others will see the strength she has to stay in the situations she does.

Which book are you most proud of writing?

I love all the books I’ve written. A Virtual Affair has a place in my heart because there are a lot of truths in that book (and a lot of fiction). It was a tough book to write because I drew on my experiences and that took me back to troubled times. So, if I had to choose, it would be A Virtual Affair.

Which book was your favourite to write?

The Facilitator was rather fun ;) I think it has to be Fallen Angel, Part 4, though, and I can’t give you the reasons why without spoiling the read. This book concludes the Fallen Angel series and it was the first time I wrote ‘The End’. I admit to shedding tears at that point!

Who are your favourite characters from your books and why?

I’m sure you’ve had this answer before, but that’s like asking who your favourite child is.

Robert Stone, our lead man in the Fallen Angel series will always have a place in my heart. I’ve never been completely able to let go of him and one day, maybe, he’ll make a return. He’s damaged, complex, complicated, not always nice, but there’s something endearing about him as well. Mackenzie Miller is fun, a risk taker, skilled lover, of course. Gabriel is just a good guy who wants to protect his daughter, no matter the cost. And then we have the women! Brooke Stiles, kickass Brit in Fallen Angel, Evelyn, daughter of a mafia man and a wonderful, kind hearted person. There are too many for me to choose one or two, to be honest.

If you could go back and change anything from any of your books, what would it be, and why?

I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve learned from those mistakes. I’m proud of every story I’ve written and, I hope, each new one is better than the last. Someone asked me once, ‘What is the best book you’ve written?’ My answer was, ‘The last one I ever write’. I’m continually growing as an author. I’m trying my hand at new genres and being self-published, I can. If I could go back and give the younger me some advice, of course I’d do things differently in the sense I’d get a professional editor from the beginning. But making mistakes is part of the journey.

Which of your covers if your favourite and why?

Right now, it’s A Deadly Sin, which hasn’t been released yet but features Jase Dean. A very close second is Gabriel. I’ll often pick that book up and just stare at that image.

Have you ever thought about changing genres, if so what else would you like to write?

I read anything and everything except sci-fi. So, for me, it makes sense to write different genres. A lot of what I write is Romance or sub-genres of it, but I’ve enjoyed dipping my toes into the thriller and suspense world.

Looking forward can you let us know what you are working on next?

I’m currently editing A Deadly Sin which is my second thriller and much darker than the first, Gabriel. This is scheduled for release mid November. I have Jackson written (I like just having the characters name as the title!) but I’d like to do a little rewriting with that. I have about 20k of Letters to Lincoln written and a little of Harlot! I don’t generally write multiple books at the same time, but if the ideas are there, I will immediately jot them down. I pretty much have 2017 planned and even into 2018.

I dare not ask for a favourite author, but is there any author’s back catalogue you admire and why?

I admire, as an individual, Colleen Hoover. I’m in awe of this woman for her personal journey, her charitable work, her insistence on being ‘real’, and I think she’s quite fun! I’ve only ever read one book of hers, It Ends with Us. I don’t get an opportunity to read as much as I’d like to (I won't read while I’m writing), so I need a holiday, and to download a few of Colleen’s books!

Finally, is there anything else you would like to say about your back catalogue of books?

Book one in the Fallen Angel series is free on all platforms! I would ask reader to, please, read the blurbs! Each one will contain the genre and all my books are for the over 18’s. No matter what genre I write, there is sex; explicit sex! I like complicated individuals, I write slightly older characters, and with that comes a physical relationship. There are no closed door, or fade to black scenes!

Most of all, it’s fiction, it’s fun, it’s escapism for a few hours, nothing more.

Thank you Tracie for that fascinating look at your comprehensive back catalogue.
