Guest Post & Giveaway - A.L. Michael's Inspiration for If You Don't Know Me By Now - Blog Tour

It is my pleasure to welcome A.L. Michaels to my blog today, as part of her new blog tour,  and she is here to talk to us about her inspiration for If You Don't Know Me By Now.

A lot of the early reviews for my new novel have said that either I’ve spent a lot of time in coffee shops, or I worked in the service industry. Both are true! In the book, Imogen moves to London to be a writer, and ends up working as a barista in a snobby coffee shop in West London.

As most of you know, I’m a Londoner (okay, I might be living just sliiiiightly outside at the moment, but at heart, I’m still a Camden girl through and through!) and so whilst I didn’t move here to write, I did end up becoming a barista. For the most part, I loved it. I loved coffee, I loved learning about things, and having free access to caffeine. I worked as a barista locally, and then I moved to West London for a year whilst I studied for my MA.

The blog posts Imogen shares on Twisted Barista are mine- I wrote a blog for a couple of years, called Cafe Disaster, as a way of venting my rage about how people treated service industry workers. So everything in the blog posts has actually happened to me!

I think good stories come from strange everyday occurrences, and I hope you guys find the posts funny, and that Imogen’s story makes you laugh. That’s always my aim, to tell a story and make people laugh, but this one is close to my heart, because I was Imogen for a little bit! So if this story makes one person working a shitty job feel better about it, or makes you smile at a waitress and leave a bigger tip, well, my work here is done!
